An attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow resulted in at least 40 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The incident occurred during a performance by the veteran Russian rock band Picnic. Reports indicate that at least three gunmen in military fatigues opened fire on concertgoers, causing chaos and a subsequent fire that trapped some attendees inside the venue. The flames from the fire were visible from miles away, and social media videos captured the harrowing scene of people attempting to flee the gunfire and the fire engulfing the building. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin described the event as “a huge tragedy,” and while the attack’s motives remain unclear, some Russian officials have speculated on a Ukrainian involvement, a claim Ukraine denies. The White House and the U.S. National Security Council have also commented on the incident, emphasizing the lack of evidence linking Ukraine to the attack and describing the footage from the scene as “horrible.”
