Daveed Diggs is perhaps best known for his work as a writer and vocalist in the experimental hip hop group known as Clipping, his Tony and Grammy award-winning performances in Hamilton, and his recurring role as Johan Johnson in Black-ish. The 38-year-old artist has expanded his television presence further with a new role in the TNT television series adaptation and remake of the 2013 film “Snowpiercer,” which is based on the French graphic novel of the same name. Originally set to air on May 31, the series premiere will now air on Sunday, May 17. Early screenings of the series have been so positive that TNT has already ordered a second season.

Snowpiercer will explore class struggle aboard a train that travels around the world through a frozen wasteland seven years after an apocalyptic event caused a new ice age. Diggs will play the role of a prisoner at the back of the train known as Layton Well who finds himself reluctantly in the middle of a revolution.

In an interview with W Magazine, Diggs gave some insight into his character: “The murder mystery plot is a good trick to allow one character to exist between classes. Layton, who’s from the lower class, then has access to all the other classes that he’s never seen before. You get somebody that, as a detective, inherently is experienced, and then give him the access to be surprised every time he opens the door, in the same way that we hope the audience gets to be.”
