Daily marijuana use outpaces daily drinking in the US

A new study published in the journal Addiction reveals that daily and near-daily marijuana use in the U.S. now surpasses high-frequency alcohol consumption. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 17.7 million Americans reported using marijuana daily or almost daily in 2022, compared to 14.7 million who reported the same frequency of alcohol use. This marks the first time that intensive marijuana use has overtaken drinking. Jonathan Caulkins of Carnegie Mellon University notes that about 40% of current cannabis users consume it daily or nearly daily, a pattern more typical of tobacco use. The study suggests that increasing public acceptance of marijuana may contribute to more people reporting their usage. Additionally, experts warn that high-frequency marijuana use raises the risk of addiction and cannabis-associated psychosis.
