COVID-19 Cases Expected to Rise as Omicron Subvariant Detected in Monroe County

According to Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza, the omicron BA.2 variant, a subvariant of omicron, has been detected in Monroe County. Since the detection of this variant, leaders are warning that COVID cases are increasing because as of yesterday, for the second day in a row, new COVID cases have topped 200, and the number will only increase. While hospitalizations haven’t increased yet, those numbers typically take time. Anyone who is eligible for a vaccine or booster should get it now. Anyone who is at high risk should consider wearing an N95 or KN95 mask when in public spaces and maintain social distancing as much as possible.
In a statement from Bello and Mendoza, they stated: “This is not caused for panic. Most individuals who have been vaccinated and boosted, or who have previously been infected with COVID, will probably not experience severe illness from this variant. However, some people remain at higher risk.”
