Costco Doubles Down on DEI Efforts Despite Backlash

Written by on January 1, 2025

Costco has reaffirmed its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, despite facing criticism from anti-DEI shareholders. Unlike other companies such as Walmart, Lowe’s, and Ford, which have scaled back DEI efforts, Costco’s board of directors unanimously rejected a proposal from the National Center for Public Policy Research. The conservative group called for a financial risk evaluation of the company’s DEI objectives, accusing Costco of potential discrimination against white, Asian, male, or straight employees.

In its proxy statement, Costco emphasized that DEI initiatives attract and retain a diverse workforce, enhance product offerings, and reflect the values of its members. The company believes its diverse workforce contributes to the originality and creativity of its merchandise, fostering the “treasure hunt” shopping experience valued by customers.

Costco also highlighted its supplier diversity program, support for small businesses, and partnerships with organizations like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to benefit underrepresented communities. Despite backlash, Costco remains steadfast in its mission to integrate DEI into its business practices.
