Statement from Mayor Malik D. Evans on the passing of R. Carlos Carballada
I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Carlos Carballada, a champion for the city of Rochester and a good friend. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and all those who had the opportunity to know him.
Mr. Carballada was a true public servant who dedicated his life to the betterment of our community, having served as the City’s Acting Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Commissioner of Neighborhood and Business Development. In addition to these roles at City Hall, he enhanced the economic vitality and livability of Rochester by serving as director of M&T Bank and M&T Corporation, one of the places where I had the pleasure of working with him.
He was also the CEO/President of First National Bank and Central Trust Company, a New York State Regent, and the 2010 Hispanic Business Person of the Year. He served on the boards of several local non-profit agencies, and along with his wife, Virginia, established an endowed scholarship fund for City of Rochester students. His leadership and business acumen were behind some of the City’s most important and successful projects, including College Town, Brooks Landing, the Inner Loop East, the Port of Rochester Marina, and the Midtown Revitalization.
Though we will miss him, Rochester will benefit from Carlos Carballada’s service for generations to come.
