A 27-year-old Chinese university student living in Tokyo was rescued twice in five days on Japan’s Mount Fuji after ignoring safety warnings and returning to retrieve his lost cellphone. First airlifted on April 22 due to altitude sickness and missing crampons, he was again found injured and disoriented on April 27. He was carried down 2,600 feet by rescuers. The incidents occurred outside the official climbing season, which begins in July, highlighting the dangers of unauthorized ascents. Despite a lack of legal penalties for off-season climbing, officials caution against unprepared hikes.
