City of Rochester announces details of 2020 HCBU College Fair

Written by on March 1, 2020

On Thursday, February 27, the City of Rochester honored Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HCBUs) in the United States and announced details about the 2020 HCBU College Fair. Slated for November 2, the fair promises to be even bigger and better than the 2019 outing, which had 1,200 student attendees. Of these attendees, more than 300 received college admission at the event and scholarships totaling more than $3.7 million were awarded.

Diego Aviles, Vice President of Fund Development-Northeast of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), hopes to ensure that all Rochester-area students have the opportunity to attend an HCBU. In his travels around the country, Aviles notes the demand for diverse talent among hiring companies who are seeking innovation. But he’s also quick to note that although innovation comes from diversity of thought, diversity of thought comes from diverse talent. And a key way these companies will find diverse talent is by hiring graduates from HCBUs.

Mayor Lovely Warren emphasized the importance of the HCBU College Fair by saying that she wants “our young people in Rochester to be connected with these very important institutions and learn how they can play a significant part in helping them fulfill their goals and dreams.”
