City Council’s Call to Defund the New Rochester Police Station

Written by on September 15, 2020

It was all good just a few weeks ago. On August 18th, the Rochester City Council had voted to fund development of a $16 million police sub-station for the Rochester Police Department on East Main Street.

But things drastically changed after bodycam footage of Daniel Prude’s Mental Health Arrest was released.

On Friday, three council members, including President Loretta Scott, drafted legislation that would halt development of the RPD Goodman Section and Southeast Neighborhood Service Center.

Mitch Gruber is one of the council members who voted yes for this police station in August and now wants to vote no. He says the trust was broken when Daniel Prude died after being in custody and the city didn’t reveal it.

The vote is to repeal the funding is next Tuesday.
