City Council To Host Virtual Public Hearing On “Good Cause Eviction” Bill
Written by Tariq on March 9, 2022
This week on the WDKX Wake-Up Club Watercooler Councilman Willie Lightfoot & Landlord Anthony Washington talked about the “Good Cause Eviction” Bill. Willie is not in favor of the bill. With the eviction moratorium ended in January, there have been 813 eviction hearings in the City of Rochester, according to the Rochester City-Wide Tenant Union. Mary Lupien co-sponsored the “Good Cause Eviction” bill in city council. She says this law is needed because of gentrification and cases where some landlords are evicting tenants in order to raise the rent for the next tenant. The bill would make lease renewals automatic and require landlords or property owners to prove there is “good cause” to evict a resident, like not paying their rent or violating the lease.
City Council is hosting a virtual public hearing on this bill this Thursday. To register for the Hearing, participants can either email council@cityofrochester.gov or call 585-428-7538 no later than 1 p.m. on the day of the event. Participants will need to provide their first and last name, phone number, address, and email. Council will vote on the bill next Tuesday during its meeting. Click Here To Read More.
