Chikungunya Virus Spreads in Southern China Amid Heavy Rains

Written by on August 6, 2025

China is facing its largest-ever outbreak of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that causes fever and joint pain. Over 7,000 cases have been reported, mostly in Foshan near Hong Kong. The disease, usually nonfatal, can cause severe joint pain for months. While there’s no specific treatment, symptoms like fever and muscle pain can be managed. Two vaccines exist but are not widely accessible in affected regions. Authorities are combating the outbreak with mosquito net distribution, insecticide spraying, and public penalties for failing to eliminate standing water. Heavy rainfall and high temperatures have intensified mosquito breeding. Chikungunya is spreading globally, with cases increasing in South America and other tropical regions. Experts warn that climate change and urbanization are contributing to the virus’s expansion and could lead to more frequent outbreaks in densely populated areas.
