Canandaigua tornado confirmed

Written by on July 17, 2024

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a brief EF-0 tornado touched down in Canandaigua on Monday afternoon, registering maximum winds of 75 mph and a track length of 0.7 miles. Chief Meteorologist Eric Snitil provided live coverage of the Tornado Warning and later assessed the damage reports, which included snapped poles and toppled trees. While radar showed clear rotation, it wasn’t a definitive tornado signature due to Canandaigua’s distance from radar sites, making lower storm components harder to observe. Snitil explained that storm damage patterns could distinguish between tornadoes and microbursts; tornadoes cause convergent, chaotic damage, whereas microbursts result in parallel damage patterns. Despite the ambiguity, the storm’s intense winds caused significant damage, regardless of the cause. The NWS storm survey team will further investigate to confirm the tornado classification.
