California woman sends Apple AirTag to herself to catch mail thief

Written by on August 25, 2024

A woman in Southern California, frustrated by repeated mail theft from her post office box, cleverly used an Apple AirTag to catch the thief. After several items were stolen, she placed an AirTag in a package and mailed it to herself. When the package was stolen again, she tracked the AirTag to a location in Santa Maria, 16 miles from the post office. Sheriff’s deputies responded and arrested two suspects, a 27-year-old woman from Santa Maria and a 37-year-old man from Riverside. They found the AirTag, the victim’s stolen mail, and items believed to be stolen from over a dozen others. The suspects face charges including possession of stolen checks, identity theft, and burglary. The sheriff’s department praised the woman for involving law enforcement rather than confronting the thieves herself.
