California Bans Sale Of Gas Powered Cars By 2035

An executive order by California Governor Gavin Newsom was signed on Wednesday that will slowly phase out gas powered cars by 2035.

More specifically, the order will ban the sale of internal combustion vehicles and encourage zero-emission cars instead, thereby decreasing California’s greenhouse gas emissions to reduce pollution.

Newsom gave a statement, saying:

“For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe. Californians shouldn’t have to worry if our cars are giving our kids asthma. Our cars shouldn’t make wildfires worse — and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn’t melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.”

The wildfires that have been ravaging the state have contributed to the need for change, as they have destroyed over 3.6 million acres in the state and caused 26 deaths to date.
