Burn ban now in effect for all of New York State
Written by Site Hub on March 19, 2025
A statewide burn ban is now in effect across New York State, prohibiting brush burning and open fires to reduce the risk of wildfires. The ban, which began Sunday, March 16, is due to warm temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds, which make it easier for fires to spread.
Despite the ban, campfires and small cooking fires are still permitted, and fire departments can conduct controlled burns for training. However, residents must remain cautious, especially with trees and plants still dormant—as the lack of moisture in vegetation increases fire risk.
Forest rangers emphasize that the fire danger is highest before “green-up”, when new leaves and grass help slow fire spread. The ban follows a severe wildfire season last fall, prompting Governor Hochul to issue additional restrictions in high-risk counties like Steuben and the Hudson Valley before the statewide rule took effect.
Residents are urged to follow regulations and exercise fire safety precautions to prevent wildfires.
