Dr. Joel Durinka of Orchard Park, NY, has been charged with health care fraud as part of a $14.6 billion nationwide takedown involving over 320 individuals. Accused of billing Medicare for $29.6 million in unnecessary brace orders and $5.6 million in fraudulent telehealth visits, Durinka also allegedly fabricated medical records. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and making false statements, and authorities have seized over $325,000 from him. The broader DOJ investigation spans 32 states and includes seizures of cash, luxury items, and cryptocurrency. In Western New York alone, additional defendants include individuals from transportation companies accused of Medicaid fraud, and pharmacy owners charged with billing for undispensed drugs. Prosecutors emphasize the role of physicians in enabling such fraud schemes.
