Border Surveillance Towers Could Be Coming to Rochester

Written by on September 20, 2025

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is evaluating Rochester as a site for new Remote Video Surveillance Systems (RVSS). The 140-foot-tall towers use infrared technology to detect and track movement within a seven-mile radius. CBP has operated similar towers nationwide for over 15 years, with 13 already in place in the Buffalo sector. Supporters argue the technology would strengthen public safety, while critics warn of privacy violations. If approved, the installation could take several years before becoming operational. Rochester’s potential inclusion reflects broader federal efforts to enhance border security along Lake Ontario.
