Crews have recovered the body of 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard, who went missing four days ago after falling into a sinkhole while searching for her cat near her home in Marguerite, Pennsylvania. The body is being transported to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy, police confirmed.
Pollard disappeared Monday evening and was reported missing early Tuesday as temperatures dropped below freezing. Her car was found parked about 20 feet from the sinkhole with her 5-year-old granddaughter asleep inside. The sinkhole, which had recently formed above an abandoned coal mine, had grown from a small gap to a chasm about 30 feet deep.
Efforts to locate Pollard included the use of a pole camera and listening devices, but no signs of life were detected. Crews removed significant amounts of soil and rock to recover her remains. Pollard, a longtime Unity Township resident, was married for over 40 years and had previously worked at Walmart. Authorities plan to provide more details in a news conference.
