June Bacon-Bercey was a pioneering African American meteorologist and one of the first women to hold a significant role in the field of weather science.
Born in 1932, she made history in 1959 as the first African American woman to earn a degree in meteorology.
She later became the first African American woman to work as a television meteorologist in the U.S. Bacon-Bercey’s career included roles as a weather expert for various agencies, as well as a key figure in the development of weather forecasting and disaster preparedness.
She was a trailblazer for women and minorities in meteorology and was deeply involved in advocating for diversity in the sciences.
Bacon-Bercey passed away in 2019.
