The day former Minneapolis Police Officer, Derek Chauvin was booked at the Ramsey County, Minnesota jail, eight officers say they were briefly barred from the entire floor where Chauvin was being held because of the color of their skin.
Steve Lydon, the corrections facility superintendent, said when he was notified on May 29th that Chauvin would soon arrive at the jail, he made the decision to reassign some corrections officers to other posts. Lydon soon reversed the decision but, all eight employees said they were ‘deeply humiliated’ by the ‘segregation order’.
The superintendent also said, “Out of care and concern and without the comfort of time, I made the decision to limit exposure to employees of color to a murder suspect who could potentially aggravate those feelings”. His decision had been reversed within the hour.
