Black Cinema Series comes to Rochester

Written by on February 6, 2020

An ongoing monthly film series that celebrates both narrative and documentary forms of black cinema from around the world is coming to Rochester.

The Black Cinema Series has been made possible as a result of a partnership between The Rochester Association of Black Journalists and The Little Theatre, which is situated at 240 East Avenue. To honor Black History Month, the film series will also double up with some special screenings and post-movie discussions.

The first movie in the schedule is “Waves”, a sprawling drama created by Edward Shult which focuses on the bonds of forgiveness and love as seen through the lives of a black middle-class American family. The movie will be screened on February 7th at 6.30pm and will be followed by a question-and-answer style discussion.

At 6.30pm on February 21st, the series will host a screening of the acclaimed documentary “Mama Africa: Miriam Makema” which chronicles the life of the aforementioned South African singing sensation. As one of the first African musicians to achieve stardom on an international scale, Mama Makeba’s music was a mixture of art and activism, with the singer’s roots-based deeply in traditional Xhosa culture during apartheid-era Johannesburg.
