It was announced early this morning that battle rapper, Tech 9, has sadly passed; not to be confused with rapper Tech N9ne of Strange Music.
Fellow battle rapper and friend, Buttah From The Block, went to Facebook to alert friends and family of the Philadelphia rapper’s passing. In an interview with XXL Magazine, Buttah had this to say about his fallen friend,
“Sadly it’s true. We lost a Philadelphia and battle rap legend and pioneer. Unfortunately we haven’t fully figured the cause of death. We are praying that it was natural causes. He had no signs of harm done to his body.”
Born Akeem Mickens, the Philadelphia born rapper contributed lyricism, humor and innovative wordplay to the battle rap culture for more than a decade and was “one of the most well-known personalities in battle rap.” He soon got into the business of commentary on the show Champion, where he and co host, Jay Blac, discussed battle rap and the rap culture in entertainment.
The rap community has been shaken by this news. Mainstream hip-hop lyricists, like Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, Denzel Curry, Lloyd Banks and more, have already taken to social media to express condolences and offer prayers to Tech 9’s family and friends.
