Apps for Safety and Savings Are Reportedly Selling Your Driving Data to Insurance Companies

Apps like Life360 and GasBuddy, used for family safety or gas savings, have allegedly been secretly tracking users’ location and motion data and selling it to insurance companies through a data broker called Arity, owned by Allstate. T

his data has reportedly led to higher insurance quotes for some users, even those with good driving records.

A Texas lawsuit claims consumers weren’t properly informed or able to consent to this tracking. Privacy advocates argue current laws don’t protect users well enough.

A new bipartisan bill, the DELETE Act, aims to give people more control over their personal data.

Apps Allegedly Sharing Data with Arity

  • Life360: A family safety app that tracks users’ locations. While Life360 asserts that it does not share driving data with insurers without explicit user consent, it has been reported that Arity collects data from Life360 users who have agreed to share their information.

  • GasBuddy: An app that helps users find the cheapest gas prices. It has been reported that GasBuddy shares user location data with Arity, which can be used by insurers to assess driving behavior.islaBit

  • MyRadar: A weather app that provides real-time weather information. It has been reported that MyRadar shares user location data with Arity .​
