The legendary Detroit-based American singer-songwriter Anita Baker is asking her fans for a small favor after giving them music to score their lives to for over 30 years.
She would like her fans to stop buying and streaming her music.
Currently, the musical icon is battling for the rights to her master recordings.
She says that she is legally entitled to them, as she’s outlived all of her recording contracts, referencing copyright reversion, which allows musicians to have their copyrights after 35 years.
According to the Future of Music Coalition, the law doesn’t exactly state that the revision is automatic. On their website, they list the legal steps that a musician must take in order to reclaim their copyright.
In a series of tweets, she broke down what an artists earns from streaming. She referenced Prince’s struggle with streaming services, calling the industry giants “thieves in the temple.”
🎁Miraculously… i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts🎈 They no longer “Own”, My Name & Likeness. And, by Law…30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me🎼 Unfortunately, They’re gonna make me Fight 4 it. I’m Prepared, 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them ABXO🎈💓 pic.twitter.com/PXe9xzsJK0
