Angela Alsobrooks has made history by winning the Maryland Senate race against Republican Larry Hogan, becoming the first Black woman to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate and only the fourth ever elected to the Senate. Serving as the county executive of Prince George’s County since 2018, Alsobrooks has been a vocal advocate for abortion rights, educational investment, economic development, and diplomatic foreign policies.
In her victory speech, she reflected on the milestone, saying, “In all those years, there have been more than 2,000 people who have served in the United States Senate. Only three have looked like me.” Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a key supporter of her campaign, celebrated the achievement at her victory celebration, proclaiming that Maryland had made “herstory.” He stated, “We are sending a fighter to Capitol Hill.”
Alsobrooks’ election marks a significant step forward in representation and sets a new precedent in Maryland’s political landscape, highlighting the ongoing progress toward diversity and inclusion in American politics.
