Albany Man Confesses on TV to Killing, Burying Parents; Arrest Follows

Lorenz Kraus, 53, admitted during a CBS6 interview that he killed his parents eight years ago and buried them in the backyard of their Albany home. The confession came a day after investigators exhumed two bodies amid a probe into continued Social Security payments for Franz and Theresia Kraus, who hadn’t been seen in years. Kraus characterized the deaths as “mercy killings,” describing suffocation after repeated questioning by anchor Greg Floyd. He was arrested immediately after leaving the studio and charged with two counts of murder; a public defender entered a not guilty plea. The case began as a financial crimes inquiry alleging Kraus used his parents’ benefits for personal expenses. Neighbors believed the couple had returned to Germany. Defense counsel is examining whether the interview raises admissibility issues if media acted as agents of law enforcement.
