Activists Launch McDonald’s Boycott Over Corporate Practices
Written by Site Hub on June 23, 2025
The “economic blackout” movement, led by The People’s Union USA and activist John Schwarz, launched a week-long boycott of McDonald’s, demanding fair taxes, price controls, and stronger corporate accountability. The movement claims McDonald’s engages in price gouging and fails to uphold diversity and inclusion values. In response, McDonald’s highlighted its tax contributions and support for 800,000 workers, dismissing the accusations as misleading. The campaign echoes previous boycotts targeting Walmart, Amazon, and Target—efforts that had limited financial impact. However, McDonald’s faces this scrutiny amid declining sales and growing customer frustration with rising prices, which have increased by 40% since 2019. Some companies have retreated from DEI initiatives following political and legal pressures, including McDonald’s, which rebranded its diversity office. Analysts remain skeptical of the boycott’s impact, citing poor coordination, though past efforts like the Target boycott did influence sales.
