Linda Brown passed away Sunday afternoon in her longtime hometown of Topeka, Kansas. She is the reason we ALL can go to school together anywhere you live in America today.
Brown was the student at the center of one of the biggest court cases in United States history regarding education and segregation.
In 1954 the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs The Board Of Education involved several families but all started when Linda Brown was not allowed to go to the all white school that was a few blocks from her home.
Oliver Brown, Linda’s father was upset that his daughter would have to be shuttled miles away just to go to summer school. Oliver partnered with the NAACP and other plaintiffs to file a lawsuit the would change the landscape of education in America.
The Supreme Court unanimously ruled the “separate but equal” doctrine in public facilities was unconstitutional and it denied the 14th amendment’s guarantee of equal protection of education under the law.
Current Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was the lead attorney for the NAACP on the Brown vs The Board Of Education Case.
Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer tweeted:
64 years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America. Linda Brown's life reminds us that sometimes the most unlikely people can have an incredible impact and that by serving our community we can truly change the world. #ksleg https://t.co/NN08FbGq7s
