American influencer Sam Jones has come under fire in Australia after posting a video of herself snatching a baby wombat from its mother on a roadside at night. The video, which she later deleted, shows Jones carrying the squirming and hissing wombat while its distressed mother chases after her. She eventually leaves the joey alone in the dark.

The footage quickly went viral, drawing condemnation from Australian wildlife groups, politicians, and the public. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slammed Jones, sarcastically suggesting she try grabbing a baby crocodile instead. Many Australians called for her deportation and a ban from returning, with over 38,000 signatures on a petition. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that Jones had left the country voluntarily.
Jones later apologized but also defended herself, claiming she was trying to move the wombats away from traffic. However, wildlife experts warn that the joey may not have reunited with its mother, potentially causing fatal consequences. Some experts say Jones may have broken Australian wildlife laws by disturbing a protected species. The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about social media influencers mishandling wildlife for content.
