A Petition To Postpone In Person Learning At RCSD Has Gained Over 600 Signatures

Today marks the first day that the RCSD will be offering in person learning since the pandemic began. The district is beginning the process by having students return in a three tiered system that begins with k-12 students with special needs.

At this point, there have been over 600 people who have signed a petition to delay the return of in person learning until the holiday spike of COVID-19 passes. The petition was organized by the Rochester Rank And File Educators wants the decision to be made by January 11.

RCSD Physical education teacher Carin Mulawka is one of the people who signed the petition and says that she wants in person learning back, but doesn’t think that this is the right time to do it.

“We’re just asking for extended time, because the rates have gone up as far as COVID. I have health issues, a wife at home with health issues. A lot of people I spoke to were under the impression that anyone with a medical reason could stay remote, and you got a doctor’s note,” Mulawka said.

“I got a phone call saying that no, they couldn’t find someone to cover my in-person classes here at school so I would have to take a leave of absence and they would have to hire someone else. Which was opposite what they originally told us.”
