A Looming Crisis: The Impact of Project 2025 on Black Communities

Written by on July 2, 2024

During the BET Awards, actress Taraji P. Henson emphasized the urgent need to understand “Project 2025” and its potential impacts under a possible second Trump presidency. This $22 million initiative by the conservative Heritage Foundation outlines significant policy changes for the first 180 days of a Trump administration, many of which could have severe consequences for Black communities.

One major concern is the plan to centralize law enforcement under the presidency, enabling federal intervention in local matters and potentially deploying the military for domestic law enforcement. This could lead to a crackdown on peaceful protests, particularly those led by Black activists. Additionally, Project 2025 aims to dismantle civil rights protections from the 1960s, targeting affirmative action and diversity programs, which would reduce educational and employment opportunities for Black Americans.

The project also seeks to roll back protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, disproportionately affecting Black LGBTQ+ individuals. Furthermore, it envisions concentrating power in the presidency, undermining the checks and balances essential to U.S. governance and eroding civil liberties.

The plan includes a radical reduction of the federal workforce, threatening the jobs of many Black Americans who make up a significant portion of federal employees.
