A calf injury isn’t going to stop Simone Biles

Despite a calf injury, Simone Biles will compete in all four events during the Olympic team finals. Biles tweaked her left calf during floor exercise warm-ups on Sunday, but will participate fully after receiving a brief treatment. Initially, U.S. team leaders considered resting her from the uneven bars, but Biles will now compete in every event. Her husband, Jonathan Owens, is expected to support her from the stands.
The American team, favorites to win gold after their second-place finish to Russia in Tokyo, will see Biles go last on vault, floor exercise, and balance beam, and second on the uneven bars. Jordan Chiles, who ranked fourth in all-around qualifying, will also compete in all events. She will lead on vault, bars, and beam, and follow Sunisa Lee on floor exercise. Lee will compete third on uneven bars, her specialty, and lead on floor exercise.
Unexpectedly, Jade Carey, the 2020 Olympic floor exercise champion, will not compete on floor due to struggles in qualifying and an illness. Hezly Rivera, the youngest team member, is not scheduled to compete in the finals.
