NYS Expected to Ban Use of Native American Mascots at Public Schools

Written by on April 15, 2023

New York State is finally expected to ban the use of Native American names, logos, and mascots at all public schools. Back in November, the New York State Department of Education issued guidance to schools across the state that suggested schools make changes to mascots affiliated with Native Americans so they weren’t at risk of violating the Dignity Act. Now, reports out of Albany indicate the suggestion will soon become a requirement.

Reports found that at least 19 school districts in Central New York with names and mascots use of Native American names.
