COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots Could Be Coming

Now that Monroe County is at a high transmission for Covid-19, many are starting to wonder if a booster vaccine is on the way. A local, Randy Stiefler who is a diabetic, two-time cancer survivor, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1979 and again in 2013, is wondering the same thing; “I know, with my health history, being on ventilators and stuff like that in the past. I definitely don’t want to go through that again.” Well, six months late, he might be the first in line for the booster as the FDA is expected to authorize booster shots for those with pre-existing conditions.

In recent studies, it has shown immunocompromised people have a lower immune response to the vaccines and some data shows the extra dose could increase antibodies by up to 50 percent, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. University of Rochester Associate Professor Dr. Angela Branche stated; “We’re now in the process of understanding how getting that boost will improve your immune response and antibody levels, and whether or not that will protect you for say the next year”
