Viola Davis Becomes The Most Nominated Black Actress In History

Viola Davis became the most nominated Black actress ever when she received her fourth Academy Award nomination for the title role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
In addition to making history, she also has the honor of being the only Black woman with two Best Actress nominations.
Before this, Davis was nominated for Doubt, The Help and Fences, where she starred along with Denzel Washington. Davis became the first Black woman to win a Lead Actress Emmy when she was in “How To Get Away With Murder.”
She took that opportunity to speak about the lack of diversity in Hollywood and relayed her struggle to find success as a Black actress.
Her words still ring true:
“You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”
