COVID-19 Vaccines Are En Route To Rochester

Written by on December 9, 2020

The University of Rochester Medical Center is getting ready to accept shipments of the coronavirus vaccine.

Officials are saying that the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech could get emergency use authorization from the FDA as soon as next week, right around the time the first shipment is expected to arrive.

The vaccine itself is pretty tricky to ship – it requires “high-tech, ultra-cold freezers” that keep the vials at -112 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to URMC’s Chief Pharmacy Officer, Curt Haas, each freezer can hold up to 180,000 doses. He also says that the freezers are hooked up to an emergency backup power device and are equipped with alarms that will go off if the temperatures rise.
