New Bill Reform Would Let Anyone Record Police On The Job

New York State Assembly passed a new police reform bill Monday.
The bill will allow people to legally record police officers on the job. This will protect the rights of anyone who is not under arrest or in custody to record police on cell phones. The recordings do not have to be turned over to police.
Speaker Carl Heastie said, “without these recordings, incidents of police misconduct may never be brought to light.” Heastie added, “When you see some of these things on video, any person with half a heart has to say this just isn’t acceptable.” Assembly Minority Leader Crystal Peoples Stokes said “We are not anti-police. We are anti-bad-police.”
The legislative session ends June 19th.
