Rochester hospitals and organizations receive donation to combat COVID-19

On Thursday, April 16, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation announced that it’s providing an additional $500,000 to Rochester hospitals and community organizations out of a $1.5 million donation to 18 separate facilities. Rochester Regional Health and the University of Rochester Medical Center are on the recipient’s list. The foundation will distribute the rest of the total donation to other first response healthcare facilities in Western New York and nearby parts of Michigan. Additionally, the Rochester Area Community Foundation and the United Way of Greater Rochester will receive a separate $200,000 for the Community Crisis Fund.
David Enger, President and CEO of the foundation, explained in a statement that the money is to pay for a variety of basic needs like childcare, healthy meals and transportation for nurse aides, food services staff, environmental staff and other first responders in healthcare systems who typically don’t have access to the “financial and social supports” that they need even though they play “equally critical roles.”
As Enger explained: “Caregivers on the front lines of COVID-19 put themselves in harm’s way for the benefit of others and work tirelessly, day in and day out. It’s critical that they too are cared for. Our trustees and staff have been touched by stories shared by our grantees… We hope these grant funds play a role in providing some comfort to these crucial workers.”
The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation has allocated $6 million in total to combating COVID-19 in various regions. It has already donated $1.25 million during this crisis.
