Virtual quarantine party hosted by DJ D-Nice is a huge success

Written by on March 27, 2020

For days now, 49-year-old Derrick Jones, known popularly as the deejay and rapper D-Nice, has been hosting a free live quarantine dance party via his Instagram account @dnice in the afternoon and evening each day around 2 or 3 p.m. PST. The party typically runs for six to nine hours and features not only a variety of old and new dance music, but also celebrity guests. D-Nice has been using Instagram Live’s split feature to host visitors. The “Homeschoolin’ Social Distancing Dance Party,” abbreviated to “Home School,” has attracted hundreds of thousands of people since it started.

As D-Nice told Sandra Garcia with The New York Times on Saturday, “Musically we found a way to use tech to unite people, that’s a beautiful thing.”

Derrick Jones has been a popular and loved member of the hip-hop music community and dance party scene since the 1980s. He started at age 16 as a pioneer in Bronx hip-hop with Boogie Down Productions (BDP). He also helped produce “Self Destruction,” which is known as an anti-violence anthem.

D-Nice hosts “Home School” with the hashtag #ClubQuarantine from his kitchen. So far, his guests have included Janet Jackson, John Legend, Common, Big Daddy Kane, Diddy, Drake, Queen Latifah, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, DJ Khaled, Donnie Wahlberg, Naomi Campbell, the Obamas, John Biden and Bernie Sanders.
