Jamie Foxx was among many that were honored at the 11th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards in Los Angeles Wednesday night. The African American Film Critics Association Awards reviews films that particularly emphasize the black experience. Other ethnic projects that broach new territory as far as cinema is concerned are included as well.

Foxx was recognized as best supporting actor for playing the part of Walter “Johnny D.” McMillan in the film ‘Just Mercy.’ Foxx, who has won several awards, including a Grammy and an Oscar, said being recognized by his own people was just as special as the other awards.

Among Foxx and other honorees at the AAFCA awards were Eddie Murphy and Jordan Peele. Murphy was unable to attend the awards, but received the best actor award portraying Rudy Ray Moore in the Netflix original movie ‘Dolemite is my Name.’

The 2019 thriller, ‘Us’, featuring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke and directed by Jordan Peele, won the award for best picture. This is the second time a film directed by Peele has won the best picture at the AAFCA awards. His 2017 film ‘Get Out’ also received this honor in 2018. Peele was also recognized as best director.
