Student Protests Over RCSD Budget Cuts Continue

Written by on December 16, 2019

Students, teachers and staff within the Rochester City School District have organized another round of protests this week regarding the massive budget cuts and layoffs within the district.

Let’s recap…

RCSD and the Board of Education have been battling an ongoing budget crisis for some months now. With the deficit growing to $30 million, city school district officials have decided to lay off more than 150 teachers, administrators and staff.

Not only is it planned to let go of such a huge chunk of essential staff, officials want it done BEFORE January 1, 2020. Although the Board of Education still has to vote on this matter this Thursday, teachers and staff who would be cut were already notified last week.

This decision sparked a rash of protests among RCSD students, teachers, parents and staff which began last week and are continuing today.
