A viral video showing a mother with sickle cell and her children being attacked by a group of students near Orville Bright Elementary School on Chicago’s Far South Side has sparked outrage among parents and community members.
Dozens gathered at the school demanding accountability and calling for expulsions.
The victims, 33-year-old Corshawnda Hatter and her 9-year-old son, were hospitalized in serious condition after being repeatedly struck and thrown to the ground.
Family members say the boy had been bullied for two years, and the harassment escalated into Monday’s assault.
Some parents anonymously confirmed ongoing bullying issues at the school.
The city is relocating the family for safety, and Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the incident while CPS pledged support for the victims.
Police are preparing to question several students with sensitivity, as they are minors.
No arrests have been made, and Area Two detectives continue to investigate.
One person suggested that the police should, “Find out who these kids are and lock them up & make their parents pay them restitution for pain & suffering.”
