$50M Lawsuit Against Nelly Dismissed — Now He Wants Legal Fees Paid Back

Written by on October 15, 2025

A federal judge has recommended Nelly be reimbursed for legal fees after a $50 million lawsuit filed by former St. Lunatics member Ali Jones was dismissed.

Jones claimed he and other group members were owed songwriting credit and royalties for eight tracks on Nelly’s 2000 debut album Country Grammar.

While three other members were initially named, they quickly withdrew, saying they didn’t authorize the case.

Jones dropped the suit in April 2025, and the court has now labeled it “baseless” and “frivolous.” With the legal battle over, Nelly walks away cleared of all claims — and may soon recoup his legal costs.
