AAA Advises Drivers on What to Do After Hitting a Deer

Written by on October 7, 2025

With deer season peaking in October, AAA is warning drivers to stay alert on New York roads. Mark Gruba of AAA recommends braking firmly, staying in your lane, and avoiding swerves that could cause serious crashes. If a collision occurs, drivers should contact their insurance provider and call 911 to file a report immediately. Leaving the scene may complicate insurance claims. In 2023, there were over 31,000 deer-related crashes statewide, with nearly 40% occurring in the fall months. AAA also urges drivers not to attempt deer removal from the road, as cleanup is handled by state or local highway departments. Updated statistics for 2024 are expected later this month.
