New York Modernizes Hunting Licenses with Digital Tags

Written by on October 3, 2025

The New York DEC announced new hunting rules that allow licenses and carcass tags to be managed through the HuntFishNY app. Hunters can now record harvests digitally without physical tags, as long as they maintain possession of the animal. Paper licenses remain available but must now be reported within 48 hours instead of seven days. Additionally, hunters can use crossbows like traditional bows during deer and bear seasons, expanding access for older or physically limited hunters. Landowners will also benefit from extended permits to manage deer populations. The changes aim to streamline reporting, modernize hunting practices, and strengthen wildlife management.
