License Plate Cameras Drive Down Car Thefts in Greece by Half

Written by on September 17, 2025

Chief Michael Wood of the Greece Police Department reported that the town’s license plate recognition (LPR) system has scanned over 100 million plates in under a year, with around 55 cameras operating 24/7.

The technology has significantly aided crime-fighting efforts, leading to arrests in cases involving stolen vehicles, bank robberies, and shootings.

One notable arrest involved a woman caught driving a stolen car from New Jersey.

As a result of the LPR system, the department has seen a 55% increase in stolen car arrests and a 50% decrease in car thefts, with only 95 stolen vehicles reported so far in 2025, compared to 441 in 2024 and 571 in 2023.

Wood attributes this progress directly to the LPR system and advocates for broader adoption, emphasizing the need for strong support from local political leaders to ensure public safety.
