Social Security Says It Will No Longer Send Paper Checks. What You Need to Know
Written by Site Hub on July 31, 2025
Starting September 30, the Social Security Administration will stop mailing paper checks to beneficiaries, requiring recipients to use direct deposit or the Direct Express debit card. The change affects around 500,000 people—less than 1% of all beneficiaries. The move is part of a broader government effort to modernize payment systems and combat check fraud. Paper checks are costlier and more vulnerable to scams than electronic transfers. Exceptions will still be allowed in limited cases, such as for individuals over 90 or those in remote areas. Officials urge affected individuals to prepare for the transition or apply for a waiver if necessary.
