Target Ends Decade-Old Price Matching Policy

Written by on July 19, 2025

Target has announced the end of its long-standing price matching policy that allowed customers to request discounts if they found identical items for less on Amazon or Walmart. Starting July 28, the company will only honor price matches for products sold at different prices within Target stores or on its website. Introduced in 2013, the policy was originally seen as a way to compete with major e-commerce rivals and retain in-store traffic. However, Target has faced financial setbacks recently, including a decline in sales, staffing issues, and backlash related to diversity initiatives. Retail analysts say this move aligns Target with other large retailers that don’t offer external price matching. Still, critics argue the decision could deter cost-conscious shoppers, especially for high-ticket items. Target says its focus will now be on refining internal pricing strategies using advanced analytics and real-time competitor tracking.
