Massachusetts Tree Battle Sparks Bigger Question: Do You Trust Your Neighbors?

Written by on July 16, 2025

How important is it to have a good relationship with your next-door neighbors—especially when you’re locked into a 30-year mortgage?

We’ve all heard horror stories about nightmare neighbors, and let’s be real, that can make homeownership a lot more stressful than it needs to be.

So, I want to ask our WDKX listeners: What’s your relationship like with your neighbors?

This question hits even harder after hearing about the neighbor drama in Massachusetts, where a tree-cutting dispute turned into a full-on legal battle.

A Nantucket man, Jonathan Jacoby, is facing a $1.4 million lawsuit after allegedly cutting down 16 of his neighbor’s decades-old trees to improve his ocean view.

Neighbor Patricia Belford claims Jacoby trespassed onto her property in February 2025 and illegally removed the trees, some over 30 feet tall, just months before listing his home for nearly $10 million.

Jacoby denies trespassing, calling the trees “crappy.” The lawsuit accuses him of knowingly violating property rights to enhance his home’s market appeal.

Most Americans have cordial to friendly relationships with their neighbors—about 6 in 10 get along well—with nearly half trusting them.

Close friendships are less common, and roughly 40–42% report experiencing a conflict at some point.
