Black Bear Startles Pittsford Neighborhood; DEC Offers Safety Advice
Written by Site Hub on June 18, 2025
A black bear cub was spotted roaming a quiet Pittsford neighborhood, surprising residents and prompting safety guidance from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Biologist Jessica Haggerty advised residents not to panic, make loud, aggressive noises, and back away slowly. Experts say bear sightings are increasingly common in spring and summer as bears search for food. Residents are urged to secure garbage, take down bird feeders, and avoid leaving pet food outside to prevent future visits. The town is working with DEC to monitor further sightings.
